ay holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Claremont Graduate University and is known for his musical excellence and versatility. He has many years' experience as a music educator in Southern California and is currently a member of the music faculty at Pomona College, Claremont Graduate University, and College of the Canyons. He has also appeared nationally as a guest conductor and trumpet clinician and has appeared internationally as an authority on the history of music for brass instruments.
As a performer, he has worked with scores of noted classical and popular artists. He performs and records on the natural trumpet and has often been a featured soloist on modern trumpet. He can also be heard on the sound tracks to numerous Hollywood motion pictures. He has conducted a wide variety of orchestral music with professional, collegiate, community, and youth orchestras, in addition to conducting wind ensembles, jazz bands, early music groups, and musical theater and chamber opera productions.
Ray composes for orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, brass band, big band, and chamber ensembles. His compositions have been performed widely across the United States and in Europe.
